Spring is around the corner, which means it’s the perfect time to prep your Kubota generator for the season ahead. After a long winter, your equipment might need a little extra attention to make sure it runs smoothly when you need it most. 

Here are a few simple do’s and don’ts to help you get started: 

Do: 

Check engine oil and coolant levels
Before firing up your generator, take a minute to check the oil and coolant. Low levels can cause performance issues – or keep it from starting altogether. 

 

Change the oil and filters if it’s been in storage
If your generator hasn’t run in a while, fresh oil and clean filters can go a long way. It’s a quick step that helps your engine stay healthy. 

 

Inspect all electrical connections
Give everything a once-over. Look for any loose or damaged wires, and check for signs of corrosion. Catching small issues early can save you big headaches later. 

 

Check your diesel fuel
Fuel can absorb water during the winter months, which can affect performance. If the fuel looks cloudy or has been sitting too long, drain it and refill with fresh diesel. 

 

Test the battery and alternator
A weak or dead battery is a common issue after winter storage. Make sure it’s fully charged and in good shape before putting your generator to work.

Block any intake ports
Check to make sure nothing is covering or clogging the intake ports. Your generator needs proper airflow to run efficiently. 

 

Run it with corroded battery leads
Corrosion on battery terminals can affect performance or keep your unit from starting. Clean them off before getting started. 

 

Reuse an old air filter
A dirty filter can restrict airflow and hurt performance. It’s best to replace your air filter every season. 

 

Ignore worn-out rubber parts
Take a look at hoses and belts. If they’re cracked or feel brittle, it’s time to swap them out.

If your generator sat in cold storage all winter, give it a little extra care before starting it up. And remember – no matter the season, it’s a good idea to have your generator serviced every six months.
